Berkeley, 1988. The 38-year-old Mark O'Brien needs since the age of six an iron lung because he suffers from polio. Beyond the variety of physical problems he has, including a form of paralysis from the neck down (he has no use of the muscles but has the feelings of them) and thus being bedridden, he has studied the total capacity of his abilities studied English Literature at UC-Berkeley and is a poet and journalist. He does not like it when others, especially his 24/7 staff, feel he needs them more than they need him. He is a devout Catholic, so it is difficult for his new compassionate priest, Father Brendan, to advise Mark if he does not fall in love with him in the same way after first falling in love with the woman Mark tells him he does everything want to feel what is associated with love, including sex, probably outside of marriage. So far, Mark, who can have an erection but can not masturbate, has only associated his natural ejaculations with guilt. As such, Mark, after talking to a sex therapist, is considering losing his virginity with a sexual surrogate that, from his own professional perspective, should provide him with the tools with which he can later have a loving sexual relationship with someone else. The therapist's suggested surrogate is Cheryl Cohen Greene, who has never had a patient like Mark. When Mark and Cheryl start discussing what surrogate motherhood means, they enter into a relationship with several people, including his many companions, Father Brennan and Catholicism, as well as Cheryl's own family with husband and son. One question that may arise is whether both Cheryl and Mark in particular can maintain their relationship purely professionally with a finite life as intended.
