In Chicago in 1924, Artie Strauss and Judd Steiner are friends and fellow law students from affluent backgrounds. They have few true friends, believing that all their contemporaries are intellectually inferior. Although Judd acts arrogantly over others, Artie's inherent weakness is understood and exploited, and in fact, Judd seems to enjoy his submissiveness to Artie. Part of her purpose in life, perhaps influenced by her admiration for Nietzsche, is to experience what it feels like to do something that pleases you. So they plan to commit what they consider to be the perfect crime - a kidnapping and a murder - not just to witness the killing for the sake of murder, but also - especially in Artie's case - to mock the authorities afterwards. They believe themselves above the law. However, the actual murder of little Paulie Kessler and the subsequent attempts to cover her tracks are not so perfect. Sid Brooks, a fellow student (who also works for the Globe Newspaper), who looks down on her, is astute enough to conclude that a pair of glasses found in the body does not belong to the boy, and the police begin to investigate their reality to search owner. Artie and Judd try to figure out how this evidence could involve them. However, the police are clever enough to break their defense and in the end they confess. Jonathan Wilk, known for his ability to manipulate juries, is hired to defend the couple, though his atheism is directed against family sensitivity. Jonathan has to decide how best to defend his clients in the face of overwhelming evidence against them.
