Juan Oliver wants to make a good impression on his new job as a prison official and announces his intention to work one day earlier, leaving his pregnant wife Elena at home. His fate is forever changed by this fateful decision, as an accident occurs during his tour of the prison, rendering him unconscious. He is brought to the empty but visibly haunted walls of cell 211. As this distraction unfolds, occupants of the high-security cell block strategically erupt and abduct the prison. In the face of impending violence, prison officials flee leaving Juan unconscious at the heart of the uprising. When Juan wakes up, he immediately takes stock of the situation. To survive, he has to pretend to be a prisoner. Juan develops a dialogue with the violent leader of the uprising, Badass, and the two begin a partnership. Badass is firmly convinced that Juan is a new inmate. The negotiations run smoothly until the rioters take hostage to three ETA prisoners (the militant Basque separatist organization). When this appears in the news, there is a flood of prison riots across the country and demonstrations in the Basque Country. Juan quickly realizes that he is on his own when the situation is politicized and the government interferes, fearing possible consequences for the Basque community. As the drama increases, unexpected character changes occur inside and outside the prison.
