Sixty-one-year-old widower Will Varner is ill and has many businesses and properties in Frenchman's Bend, Mississippi, including a plantation. For him, his children are a disappointment, which he considers ineligible to continue the name Varner in the style he rebuilt. Son Jody Varner has no ambitions and does not work. He spends a lot of time playing with his seductive wife Eula. He finds the 23-year-old daughter Clara Varner smart, but he thinks she also wastes her time for more contemplative occupations. While most of her contemporaries are married, Clara has been with Alan Stewart, the boy of a noble mum, for six years. Will would not bother Alan so much, though he thought Alan had a somewhat powerful man in him, which he could demonstrate by actually asking Clara to marry him. Conversely, Jody regrets that nothing he does is ever good enough for his father, while Clara plainly dislikes the way he treats her. Ben Quick, whom Jody hired during Will's stay in the hospital, enters her life to share something on the vacant land. Despite Will's belief in the unsubstantiated stories that Ben burned a man's barn as an act of revenge, Will sees Ben as the son he never had, since he has pretty much the same shape. As such, Will does everything to make Ben become part of the family, to continue the name of Varner as Will will, meaning marrying Clara. Through the process, Clara can come to a realization of what she really wants in life, while Jody does everything to maintain his position in the family.
